Since we're talking professional equipment here I assume that people pay more money for better quality and/or functionality and not because it's the format of the moment.Originally posted by assyrix:

It's not better than Beta SP, and you pretty much say that in your final couple of sentences.
But you prefer BetaSP probably because you have invested heavily in the equipment (according to previous posts of you) and the same goes for me wrt DV.

Even if I invested "heavily" in the BetaCam SP format several years ago, it doesn't affect me in purchasing new equipment if I can justify it.
The BetaCam SP has paid for itself so it's not like I have to use it. I use it because it is a rock solid reliable format. DVCAM IS NOT an archival format, neither is Mini-DV.
Since the cameras I own can all dock to DVCAM I have considered buying a DVCAM back for my camera but I believe the DVCAM record backs are superoverpriced.
And I still don't know why you think the BetaCam SP gear sells for pennies on the dollar. ON Ebay, the UVW-1800 routinely sell for between 4,000-6,000... New they cost between $7,800-8,500.
An incredible resale amount when one considers that some of these decks being sold are 5 years or older and may already have a few thousand hours on them.
That means that people are buying BetaCam SP decks and for 3 bucks a day they get unlimited use to the betacam SP decks, then they can if they want resell for over half of what they bought it for.
I have one BetaCam SP deck that is now 9 years old. I bought it for $7,200 as a B-stock unit.
I could probably sell it for $4,000-4,500.
That means that I "lost" $3,000 dollars in resale for a machine that I used for 9 years.
That works out to barely a dollar a day to own it.
