Alex:
That's ashame to hear about the strobing on the Panasonic camera. I had read about the same problem on the DVX100, but I didn't realize that the problem still existed on their higher end cameras.

Here's a dumb question for the rest of the board... When it comes VHS and DVD, both of those formats use 4:1:1 (NTSC) or 4:2:0 (PAL) color sampling, right?

Also, what is the broadcast standard? When I watch the evening news, is the footage sourced at 4:2:2 and then dumped down to 4:1:1?

It's not better than Beta SP, and you pretty much say that in your final couple of sentences.
Judging from market prices for the equipment (usually a more objective indication than subjective impressions) it is. Since we're talking professional equipment here I assume that people pay more money for better quality and/or functionality and not because it's the format of the moment.

But you prefer BetaSP probably because you have invested heavily in the equipment (according to previous posts of you) and the same goes for me wrt DV.

Even if I invested "heavily" in the BetaCam SP format several years ago, it doesn't affect me in purchasing new equipment if I can justify it.

The BetaCam SP has paid for itself so it's not like I have to use it. I use it because it is a rock solid reliable format. DVCAM IS NOT an archival format, neither is Mini-DV.

Since the cameras I own can all dock to DVCAM I have considered buying a DVCAM back for my camera but I believe the DVCAM record backs are superoverpriced.

And I still don't know why you think the BetaCam SP gear sells for pennies on the dollar. ON Ebay, the UVW-1800 routinely sell for between 4,000-6,000... New they cost between $7,800-8,500.

An incredible resale amount when one considers that some of these decks being sold are 5 years or older and may already have a few thousand hours on them.

That means that people are buying BetaCam SP decks and for 3 bucks a day they get unlimited use to the betacam SP decks, then they can if they want resell for over half of what they bought it for.

I have one BetaCam SP deck that is now 9 years old. I bought it for $7,200 as a B-stock unit.

I could probably sell it for $4,000-4,500.
That means that I "lost" $3,000 dollars in resale for a machine that I used for 9 years.

That works out to barely a dollar a day to own it.

Look--

This thread is not about f?cking BetaSP vs. DVCam!!!!

Please stick to the subject. I am looking for resources--If you know of none then there is no need to post.

Thanks and good luck

So where can I go to get the latest on video?? I have shot with the XL1(Hated it), the PD-150(Slightly better than the XL1) and the Panasonic DVX100(was the best of the lot).

Now, while I am still standing behind film 100% it seems some forward movement is being made in DV.

Who has the low down on the technology?? Unbiased resouces are always the best.

Thanks
Well, if we reread portions of your original topic post, you seem to be saying you've tried the latest DV stuff but aren't that impressed.

It would seem that BetaCam SP is still relevant then.

Perhaps you could redefine your question as to when it makes sense to use a smaller "digital type" of camera and when it makes sense to use a larger, ENG BetaCam SP type of camera.

Your temper sure reminds me of someone else sometimes.

Sheesh.

The original post also says that there is no need to discuss tape stocks. Because I say "I do know tape stocks and what they offer."

So please only post if you have camera related links or information.

Thanks You

Then you know DV is a wafer thin tape stock and the more your production day costs the more you risk by shooting on such a fragile format.

Based on your initial question, another question arouse that probably would give cause to a lot of great contributions yet you have no interest.

It seems like you have tried the three hottest DV cameras already.

good luck.
